January 2020: PORET Trust has implemented a climate change and land rehabilitation project in Ngangu, Chimanimani focusing on resuscitating Ngangu Primary School Orchard and planting indigenous trees in the degraded areas of Ngangu community after the damage caused by Cyclone Idai last year.
The project mainly focuses on laying a foundation for food security and sensitisation of local communities on agroecology practises.
The project supported the school with 240 citrus fruits, that will provide school children with fruits as well as a learning site for local school and the surrounding communities. Over 50 mahogany trees were also planted around the school as a wind break and to prevent soil erosion in the future.
The community also planted 2,000 mahogany and 50 lemons trees in the eroded gullies as a way to reduce similar effects in future.
The project was supported by government stakeholders including the Environmental Management Agency, Agritex, Forestry Commission, District Development Committee, District Education office, Chimanimani Rural district council, ward councillor, traditional Leader and our sister organisation TSURO Trust as partner.
